Designing ways to do things better

Monthati Tshwagong is an independent design practitioner working across digital products, services and systems to make complex things work better for people.

What I do

I bring a considered, human-centred approach to complex challenges, connecting strategic thinking with practical design to make things work better.

Understanding how people experience services across touchpoints, and how processes, technology and organisations can work together to make them better.

Looking beyond individual experiences to understand the systems that shape them. I’m interested in how infrastructure, processes, relationships and organisational structures influence how services work, where they break down and what needs to change for them to work better.

The Approach

A look at the thinking, principles and perspective that shape my work.

Good design starts with understanding the problem.

I approach design as a way of making sense of complexity. Before jumping to solutions, I want to understand the people involved, the context they operate in and the systems shaping their experiences . Research is a key part of this process, helping me move beyond assumptions, uncover less obvious needs so I can ground design decisions in evidence.

From there, I work across analysis, design and collaboration to turn insights into ideas that can be explored,  created tested and developed. I pay attention not only to how an experience looks and feels, but also to how it works behind the scenes.

The aim is to create experiences that make sense for the people using them and the organisations responsible for delivering them.
